The research activity of the UMIL group is mainly focused on an improved understanding of the physiology and pathology of human lipoproteins and of the efficacy and mode of action of agents affecting atherosclerosis and remodeling. Genotype-phenotype relationships, lipid/lipoprotein metabolism and lipoprotein pathophysiology are investigated through transgenic mice expressing human apolipoproteins, and knock-out mouse models. In addition, our rabbit model of lipid rich soft plaque is used to study, by invasive (IVUS) and non-invasive (MRI) techniques, the effect of novel therapies or dietary approaches on atherosclerosis progression/regression.
